# Compassion Over Criticism: The Heart of an Alcohol-Free Journey **April 7, 2025** **By Lauri McGivern, MPH, ALPC – Certified Alcohol-Free Coach, Free Spirits AF** If you're exploring your relationship with alcohol, chances are you've had moments of doubt, guilt, or self-judgment. You may have asked yourself: Why can't I just get it together? Why does everyone else seem to manage drinking just fine? These thoughts are incredibly common—and they're also incredibly harsh. At Free Spirits AF, we believe that compassion and self-love are not only powerful tools for change—they are the foundation of it. The alcohol-free journey is not a test of willpower or perfection; it's a process of healing, discovery, and reconnection with your truest self. ## Why Compassion Matters Many of us have internalized the idea that we need to be tough on ourselves to make real change. But research—and lived experience—shows the opposite: when we treat ourselves with kindness and understanding, we're more resilient, more motivated, and more open to lasting transformation. When we approach our alcohol-free path with compassion, we begin to say things like: * It makes sense that I've been drinking—there's a reason I've turned to it. * I'm learning, not failing. * Every step forward, no matter how small, is worth celebrating. ## What Self-Love Looks Like Self-love doesn't mean ignoring your goals or avoiding responsibility. It means honoring your needs, your emotions, and your progress. It looks like: * Setting gentle boundaries with people and situations that drain you * Prioritizing rest, pleasure, and creative expression * Speaking to yourself as you would to a dear friend on the same journey ## A Loving Practice This month, try starting your day with a question: **What is the most loving thing I can do for myself today?** It might be going for a walk, reaching out to your alcohol-free support group, writing in your journal, or simply taking a deep breath and remembering—you're doing the brave work. The path to freedom is not paved with punishment. It's walked with compassion, one loving step at a time. You are not alone. You are not broken. You are becoming.
